Daniel Francis Sheridan, 78, of Newville, died on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, in the Green Ridge Village, Swaim Center, Newville. Born on March 28, 1931, in Jersey City, N.J., he was a son of the late Francis and Madelyn Keane Richardson, and the widower of Winifred Louise Oberlander Sheridan. Daniel attended St. Peter's Prep., and graduated from Lincoln High School in Jersey City, N.J. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1948, and retired in 1973 after 25 years of service. He successfully worked his way through the enlisted ranks as a yeoman and was commissioned as an officer in 1963. He retired as a lieutenant administrative officer. During his military career, he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal; the Meritorious Unit Commendation; the Navy Unit Commendation; the National Defense Service Medal with a star; the Good Conduct Medal with four stars; and the Navy Occupation Medal (Europe clasp). After his military career, he relocated to Nashua, N.H., where he worked as an office manager for the Hartford Insurance Group until 1981. He then worked for Sanders/Lockheed in Nashua, as an administrative assistant until permanently retiring in 1986. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 54 years, Winifred. He was very proud of his son's and two daughter's achievements and was actively involved in their growth and education as children, and continued to provide guidance as they moved into adulthood and started their own families. Daniel was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Carlisle. His joy in life was bowling, and was on numerous bowling teams in the Navy, winning many individual and team championships. He also actively participated in league bowling after leaving the Navy. He was a master bridge player and enjoyed playing in competitive tournaments. He also enjoyed a competitive game of chess, developing the family genealogy, and was an avid New York Yankees and Boston Celtics fan. In his later years he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchild, providing mentoring and guidance to them and expressing his "button popping" enjoyment of their accomplishments. Surviving are his son, Daniel Francis Jr. (and his wife, Patricia Ann) Sheridan of Naugatuck, Conn.; two daughters, Carol Ann (and her husband, Matthew Dean) Culbertson of Carlisle and Kathleen Marie (and her husband, John Robert) Gallo of Newport News, Va.; five grandchildren, Patrick Sheridan, Jennifer (and husband, Michael Ray) Rodriguez, William (and wife, Katherine) Sheridan, Rachel Culbertson and Andrew Culbertson; and a great-grandchild, Jacob Rodriguez. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Frances Gorman, Martin Sheridan, Florence Rosado, Donna Richardson, Margaret Richardson, Dennis Richardson, William Richardson, Patricia Graham, Kenneth Richardson and Sheri Dalto; and a sister-in-law, Carol Powell. He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Sheridan. Funeral services will be held at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Fort Myers Chapel in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Burial will follow, with full military honors. Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home and Crematory, 219 N. Hanover St., Carlisle, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
