In 1797 Brooke Co., Virginia was formed from Ohio Co., Virginia. Brooke Co., was in Virginia until 1863 then it became West Virginia.
1826, Benjamin Shepherd bought land in what is now Marshall County W.V. where he and his wife, Mary, settled and reared their family. He was a farmer, owned large vindyards, and was a merchant of note. He was a pioneer school teacher before marriage, was a Road Supervisor in Marshall County, and served in the Virginia Militia. When the B & O railroad was extended west to the Ohio River, they bought a right of way through his farm for their tracks and a tunnel (Shepherd's tunnel) near Roseby's Rock, Marshall Co., W.V.
Their child's burials that has not been found is
Sarah D. Shepherd (1825–1904) married in 1852 Marshall Co., West Virginia to William Patterson, he died in 1857.
