John William Frederick Shaw was born February 11, 1885 in Islington, Greater London, England. His parents were Rabbi Shaw (1857-1941) and Eleanor Moore (1856-1925). [Note: "Rabbi" was Rabbi Shaw's first ("Christian") name, not a religious title.]
John lived his early life in London. By 1908 the family had relocated to Leicester, Leicestershire, England.
On July 19, 1908 John married Elizabeth Thornton (b. 1890), daughter of Arthur J. Thornton (b. 1866) and Elizabeth Chamberlain (b. 1865).
John and Elizabeth had three children. They are John Arthur Thomas F. "Jack" Shaw (1908-1992); Philip Leon Glendon Shaw (1913-1985); and Gertrude Margaret Shaw, (1911-1912).
When England entered World War I, John went into the British Army. [1916 Regimental #: T327303 Regiment Name: ASC (Dr)]
While he was away at war, his wife Elizabeth left the family and they didn't see her again. This was when son Phil was about four years old, and the little girl was deceased; this would place the time at about 1917. (Efforts are ongoing to trace Elizabeth's genealogy and determine what happened to her.)
With Elizabeth gone, the boys lived with their grandparents Rabbi and Eleanor.
In Austria, John met the beautiful, charming and warm-hearted lady Therese Foune. They fell in love, and married.
After the war and back in England, the family prepared to leave for the USA. Returning veterans found there were few jobs for them. However, in the USA Mr. Henry Ford was operating a wonderful automotive plant in the Detroit area, to which people were coming from Europe and from across the USA to work. Mr. Ford paid his employees a decent wage, offered decent housing, and educated the children.
John and son Jack went first, arriving in May 1923 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. On July 1, 1923 they arrived in Detroit, and set up home.
Therese arrived at the Port of New York on July 21, 1925, aboard the Washington.
And Philip arrived 21 April 1926 to the Port of New York, aboard the Cedric.
Grandparents Rabbi and Eleanor remained in Leicester.
John, Jack and Philip eventually established one auto station and garage, and then a second.
John had been a Driver in the war, and a Chauffeur in peacetime.
He was a keen businessman, and both service stations thrived.
After World War II, the family decided to relocate to California, so they first went to Los Angeles. However, Therese died in 1946. John and his sons relocated to Orange County, California.
John also owned a hotel.
John and his two sons bought one house each on Lyon Street in Santa Ana, Orange County, California. Each of the houses was next to each other, in a row.
By this time John had married his third wife, the bright, cheerful and gracious Mary. She was Polish, and she and her family and John and his would often hold wonderful parties, made even more happy by the Polish music and polkas. Everybody would have great times.
John had a keen, sly sense of humor.
His eyes twinkled when he made one of his under-stated comments. John had a sharp intelligence and an astute business sense.
He was class conscious. Even though someone might not realize it, John would evaluate a person each moment.
John had a high regard for what is called Good Form.
Because the family surname is Shaw, some people wrongly associate John's family with the Highland Scots and try to link the family with Highland clans.
But this family has centuries-long roots in England, not Scotland.
In addition, John's mother Eleanor Moore was Lowland Scots, from the area of Dumfries.
At times some people asked John's son Philip why he, Philip, had no interest in the Highland Scots clans.
It's because the family are English Shaws, not Highland Scots Shaws--as John himself said.
On October 30, 1960 John passed away peacefully in his sleep in his and Mary's home on Lyon Street in Santa Ana, Orange, California.
