JEAN S. (SHAW) ALLARDICE, 74, of Church Street, a retired registered nurse and former newspaperwoman, died yesterday at New England Medical Center, Boston.
She was the wife of J. William Allardice. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Clinton W. and Marion T. (Kemp) Shaw, she had lived in East Providence and Fall River before moving to Somerset in 1958.
The salutorian of East Providence High School's Class of 1944, she was a 1972 graduate, magna cum laude, of Bristol Community College School of Nursing.
Mrs. Allardice had worked as a registered nurse and enterostomar therapist at St. Anne's Hospital, in the oncology department, for almost 20 years before retiring in 1991. She had previously worked for The Providence Journal, for the Fall River Herald News, where she was the suburban editor, and at the Spectator, as a correspondent and the circulation manager.
She was a member of International Association of Enterostomar Therapists and a former member of the Oncology Nurses Association.
Mrs. Allardice had been a member of the Rhode Island Civil Air Patrol, where she developed a crack drill team and attained the rank of major.
She was a member of Third Baptist Church, Fall River, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher and the parish nurse.
She was the president of United Families.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Wesley J. Allardice of Fall River; two daughters, Deborah J. Guillmette of Fall River and Nancy E. Chace of Swansea; a brother, Clinton W. Shaw Jr. of Peachtree City, Ga.; two sisters, Elizabeth W. Peterson of Cranston and Laura Fehlner of Seneca Falls, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Third Baptist Church, 260 Stafford Rd., Fall River. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River.
