SPUR-Funeral services for James Robert Sharp, 84, of Spur will be Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Spur.
Jim was born to A.C. and Ellen Bailey Denton on Jan. 12, 1929, in Swans Chapel, Texas. He graduated from Spur High School in 1947. In the fall of 1947 he played football at John Tarleton.
In 1948 he married Autrey Nell Dyess. Jim joined the Army, where he was a Sergeant RT class and was a veteran of the Korean War. After returning home from Korea, Jim began his lifelong love of farming with his father. He and Nell had one daughter. In 1960 he purchased Sharp's Flowers. He spent the majority of his life in Dickens County. During his time away he worked for Texas American Bank in Midland serving several years as an officer. After his retirement, he returned to Dickens County and began working at Spur Security Bank. Jim was a collector. He collected knives, guns, antiques, and dolls. He also spent many years playing Santa Claus with his own snow white beard. This proved to be his favorite pastime.
Jim is survived by his wife of 65 plus years, Nell. He is also survived by one daughter, Jenny Neff, and her husband Wendell of Spearman, Texas. He was affectionately known as Pappy by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving grandchildren are Clay Neff and wife Lindsey of ldalou, Texas, and Jennifer Neff Butler and husband Josh of Santa Fe, Texas. He had five great-grands, Clayton, Brady, and Kyler Neff, and Jeran and Jaylee Butler. His siblings include Dr. A.C. Sharp and wife Mary Beth of Abilene, Barbara Williams and husband Jack of Granbury, and Jane Sharp, also of Granbury. Jim will be remembered by many as a very loving and caring man. Services are under the direction of Zapata Funeral Home of Spur, Texas.
