Betty Lorraine Shafer, 87, Middletown died Tuesday October 6, 2015 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Calvin P. Shafer Jr. Born in Thurmont, she was a daughter of the late John Robert and Mary Louise Sweeney Nunemaker. Mrs. Shafer was employed wth the Frederick County Public Schools in food service and was a member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Middletown.
She is survived by: 4 children; Robert W. Shafer Sr. and wife Joan, Debra Leatherman and husband Mike, Philip C. Shafer Sr. and wife Loretta, all of Middletown and Mark C. Shafer and wife Kim - Clear Spring. 7 grandchildren; Robert Jr., Philip Jr., Crystal, Blake, Heather, Amy and Michael Jr., 7 great-grandchildren: Logan, Troy, Ethan, Austin, Steven, Rylee and Cole, 1 brother - Morris Nunemaker - Emmitsburg, 5 sisters; Janice Powell, Doris Dougherty, Sarah Stambaugh, Barbara Smith and Patricia Flohr, all of Thurmont.
She was predeceased by 1 sister Virginia Knott, and 2 brothers James Nunemaker and Charles Nunemaker and by a granddaughter Erin Leatherman.
The family will receive friends on Friday October 9 in the chapel of Christ Reformed Church, 12 S. Church St., Middletown from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held from the church on Saturday October 10 at 11 AM. Rev. Mark A. Wakefield will officiate. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.
