Mrs. Esther Sexton Cooper, widow of John Cooper, died at 7:30 this morning at her home, 320 N. George street. Although she had not been confined to the bed continuously at any time, she had been in failing health for several months as a result of an affection of the heart which finally caused her death.
Her maiden name was Esther Sexton, a daughter of the late George M. and Emeline Castle Sexton, of Lee, where she was born on October 12, 1839, being one of a family of twelve children. Her early life was spent in Lee, where in 1873 she marred Mr. Cooper, whose home was in Redfield, and after their marriage they took up their residence in Redfield, where Mr. Cooper died in 1877. The family came to this city to make their home in 1894 and have since lived here.
Mrs. Cooper was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was deeply interested in everything that pertained to the church. She was a member of the missionary society of the church and was active in the work of the Sunday school, having at one time been the superintendent of the primary department of it. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and of the Rome Hospital and took a keen interest in the promotion of the work of any charitable society in which she came in contact. Through her motherly affection for others she had won and retained the highest esteem of countless friends who will receive the news of her death with deep regret. Surviving are two sons, Cyrus D. and Claude S. Cooper of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Afra Petrie of Pulaski, who is the last surviving member of the family of twelve.
