SEIM LOUISE HILL Sept. 24, 1912 - March 4, 2003 At home in Yountville, CA. Born Selma, Indiana to Delbert H. & Nellie G. Hill. Former Supervisor of Foreign Languages, Oakland Public School System, CA. Pioneer in the use of audio-lingual labs as a tool for language instruction. Oakland Technical High School having the first lab. The labs, precursor to computers, became standard in all Oakland secondary schools. Former librarian and Spanish teacher at Oakland Technical High School, Castlemont and Frick schools. Consultant to various textbook publishers, including McGraw Hill. Graduate Berkeley High School 1930, University of California, Berkeley 1934 A.B. cum laude, credentialed 1935 Teaching, 1936 Librarian, 1958 Supervisory, 1963 M.A. Education. Affiliated Oakland Secondary Teacher's Assn., member original Exec. Bd. Foreign Language Assn. No. CA, Steering Committee for Foreign Language, California School Library Assn., Membership Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish Honor Society), Delta Kappa Gamma (Honor Society for Women in Education) & Casa Hispana. Grants from U.S. State Dept. for work at the Cultural Institute, Santiago, Chile, Ford Foundation grant to Univ. Minnesota, NDEA grant Univ of Colorado, NDEA grant Institute San Miguel de Allende and guest of the French Govt. to exchange language education methodology. Lifelong desire to learn and to teach, an inspiration to her family and friends, her great joy came through travel, museums, and the arts. In retirement, a Life Member of the Alta Bates Hospital, Berkeley, CA Volunteers, giving 10,500 plus hours. Survived by daughter, Kathleen Hudson and husband, Donald of Oakville, CA, grandchildren, Steven Thompson (Denise), Lawrence Thompson (Joanna) and Jill Goodsell (Christopher), step-grandchildren, Todd Hudson (Kimberly) and Brad Hudson (Karen), as well as seven great-grandchildren, Kimberly, Daniel, Emily, Josephine, Michael, Melinda and Kailyn. Private family services were held to honor Louise's memory and express our gratitude for the many ways she enriched our lives.
