US Mayor. Served in the United States Navy during World War II. Served as Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, from 1967 to 1975. He was defeated in 1975. Also served as a Member of the Alabama State House of Representatives from 1979 to 1991, he was defeated in 1962, and Presidential Elector for Alabama in 1992 and 1996. He played one season of professional football with Richmond in the South Atlantic Professional League.
