Cornelia Scruggs spent her entire life in Cullen, VA. She was the daughter of Elmira (nee Maddox) and Oden Clay Covington. She was the second wife of John Richard Scruggs, a traveling Baptist Minister in the Confederate Army. John enlisted in Co. H 2nd Virginia Cavalry on March 10, 1862 at Appomatox Court House. He was with General Lee at Appomatox Court House on April 9, 1865 and was surrendered there.
After John's first wife, Jane, died in childbirth his children wanted him to re-marry another woman. John refused to do so. He wanted to marry Cornelia. His sons Tommy & William (one of which was dating Cornelia) got angry, packed up and moved to Texas, never to return.
John married Cornelia in 1895 and the Reverend Crouch performed the marriage. They were the parents of Herman, Vernon, and John.
Cornelia was my Mother in Law, Lovelene's Grandmother. Lovelene spoke of Cornelia often and said she was very sweet.
