Erna Esther Schwemm, 100, of Waverly, Iowa, died Monday morning, February 22, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly of natural causes.

Erna was born on June 15, 1909, in Maxfield Township, rural Denver, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Martha (Hoppenworth) Blasberg. She was baptized on July 11, 1909, in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Maxfield, and confirmed in the same church on March 25, 1923. She attended St. John Parochial School, Maxfield, and also Maxfield #3 County School, graduating from the 8th grade. She then worked on the home farm until her marriage on December 6, 1934, to Henry Schwemm in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Maxfield. The couple farmed southwest of Tripoli, later moving to a farm west of Readlyn. They retired from farming in 1958 and moved into Waverly. Erna worked in the Laundry Department of the Lutheran Children's Home in Waverly for 20 years before retiring. Henry died on March 18, 1994, and Erna continued to live in her home until November 2005, when she moved to the Bartels Lutheran (Linden Place). On May 10, 2006, Erna became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community (Evergreen Arbor).

Erna was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, where she had been a member of the Bethlehem Circle and was also active with the monthly Senior Birthday Luncheons. In her free time, Erna enjoyed crocheting and embroidering, making many doilies, baby blankets and quilts. Erna dearly loved spending time with her nieces, nephews and their families and also enjoyed playing cards.

Erna is survived by one sister; Lorena Thurm of Denver, Iowa; two brothers and their wives, Edgar (Melva) Blasberg of Waverly, Iowa, Vernon (Allene) Blasberg of Denver, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Lavera Blasberg of rural, Waverly, Erna Blasberg of Tripoli, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Erna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; one sister, Leona Lau; three brothers, Roland in infancy, Alwin and Alfred Blasberg; and two brothers-in-law, Henry Lau and Lorraine Thurm.
