One of the foremost engineers in the world, Schuyler began his engineering career in 1869 and by 1882 was the chief engineer and general superintendent of the Sinaloa & Durango Railway in Mexico. In 1890 he designed and built the Hemet dam in Riverside County, California which at the time was the highest masonry structure in the state. He designed and built a number of water works in several cities including Portland, Oregon and Denver, Colorado. Schuyler later worked as a consulting engineer for the Great Western Power Company and during this time he planned and built works for power irrigation in Japan, Brazil, Hawaii and throughout the western United States. He was one of the three engineers who worked on the plans to bring water to Los Angeles from Owens River, 250 miles away. In 1909 Schuyler was appointed by President Roosevelt to accompany president-elect Taft to Panama as one of the seven engineers to work on the Canal. He served on several engineering boards and wrote a number of reports for the U.S. Geological Society. Schuyler married Mary Ingalis Tuliper in the summer of 1889 and the couple took up residence in Los Angeles in 1893.
