US Congressman. Born in Claverack, New York, he graduated from Lenox Academy Massachusetts, studied law and was admitted in 1847. He moved to Brooklyn, New York, in 1853, open a legal office, was District Attorney for Kings County, (1856-59), corporation counsel for the City of Brooklyn, (1862-64) and a member of the New York State constitutional conventions, (1862, 1867, 1894). In 1869, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-first Congress, served until 1871 and was again elected to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving (1873-77). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 79 in Brooklyn, New York. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
