DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Dr. Craig C. Schultz, 61, of Davenport, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, as a result of a motor vehicle/bicycle accident near Cordova, Ill.
Celebration of life services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Christ's Family Church, Davenport, with the Rev. Brian Akker officiating. Burial will be in the Davenport Memorial Park. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport.
He was born in 1946, in Madison, Wis., son of Dr. Charles and Florence Schultz. The family moved to Davenport where Craig grew up and spent most of his adult life.
During his childhood years he loved to play baseball; the Milwaukee Braves were his baseball team. Pepsi Cola, his little league team, went undefeated and won the city championship when he was 12 years old. He attended Bettendorf High School after his family moved there in 1962. High school brought many fond memories of friends, activities, sports and teachers.
He served his country in the Air Force from 1972 to 1977, attaining the rank of Major. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Psychology and then attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, following in the footsteps of his father. He served his family practice residency at the Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio, and was later reassigned to Beale AFB in California.
The majority of his medical career was in the Acute Care Department at Medical Associates, PC, Dubuque.
His number one love was spending time with his daughter, Rachel. They spent many vacation times at Disney World and in Colorado skiing and snowboarding. He enjoyed Rachel's beautiful artwork as well as her musical talents.
An avid Hawkeyes fan, Craig enjoyed all Hawkeye sports. He found great meaning in medical missionary work -- 17 trips to Haiti had a profound impact upon his life.
Craig also loved road racing, triathlons and cycling. A fitness enthusiast and athlete, Craig was conditioning for a bicycle race at the time of his death.
He was an active member of Christ's Family Church in Davenport.
Surviving are his daughter, Rachel Elizabeth and his former wife, Rhonda Hainer, of Bettendorf; sisters, Rhea Schultz, of Madison, and Sandra Schultz, of Davenport; a brother, Daniel Schultz, of Oakland Park, Fla.; and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
