Maria was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, to the Rev. David and Martha Schneider. Her parents were Methodist ministers and missionaries in Central America, where she was raised. Maria treasured the people of Latin America and adopted much of their culture. As an adult, she returned to the United States, where she became a lifelong scholar and university professor of Spanish literature. She was a professor at Reed College. Maria had a passion for religion, history and the arts. Most of all, Maria was a faithful, devout and outspoken Christian. She cared deeply for the poor and those in need. Maria was a loving mother, supporting and encouraging us throughout our lives. She cherished her extended family as well. She was a joy to be with, and will be missed. Maria is survived by her children Jeff (Brigitte), Doug (Brenna) and Maria (Bruce), four grandchildren, and her sister Karolyn. She is preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband Henry. A Memorial Service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 10:00 am. Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center – Salem.
