Daughter of Carl and Adele (Tonjes) Schmidt. She grew up on a farm four miles west of Bancroft, was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church and attended Zion Lutheran School. During her teen years, Mae worked at the Farmers' Union Grocery Store and Omaha Cold Storage in West Point. After attending West Point High School for three years, she graduated from St. John's Academy, Winfield, Kansas, in 1948 and from St. John's College in 1950. During the next five years, Mae taught at St. Peter Lutheran School, Big Rapids, Michigan; Immanuel Lutheran School, Beemer; and St. Paul Lutheran School, West Point. As an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, West Point, since December 1944, she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Bible classes; held offices in the Parent-Teacher League, School Board, Fellowship League, and local and district offices in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League; sang in the church choir; served as voluntary church secretary and church treasurer, and has been part of a Home Bible Study Group for over 20 years.
Mae and Gerhard were married at St. Paul Lutheran Church in a double wedding with her sister Fern and Erwin Knocke on August 28, 1954. Since the birth of her children, Mae has been a homemaker, caregiver, and community volunteer; delivering Meals on Wheels, acting a s a school crossing guard, serving on the library foundation board, and serving on the Ward 2 Election Board since 1964.
Survivors include her husband, Gerhard; daughters Linda (James) Abraham of Saginaw, Michigan, Ruth (Bob) Miller of West Point, Jane (Gary) Tillman of Lincoln; son Robert (Christina) Broekemeier of Springfield; grandchildren Rachel, Aaron, and Caleb Abraham, Amanda and Daniel Miller, Micah, Judah, and Hannah Broekemeier, Cari (George) Brundage; great grandchildren Hailey and Elijah Brundage; sisters Eunice Schmidt of West Point, Fern (Erwin) Knocke of Arkansas City, Kansas; brother Pastor Karl (Shirley) Schmidt of Macon, Georgia; two nephews, two nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents and one niece.
