Ruth grew up in Chicago and Glenview. It was in Glenview that she worked in the family snack shop just on the way to Glenview Naval Air Base that she met Joseph E. Harnist. He was training there in 1944. Joe was sent out to the Pacific theater aboard the USS Madusa, a tender. Joe was a pattern maker by trade and thus worked to repair injured ships. On his return to Chicago the two married Sept. 2, 1945. They moved to Belleville, Illinois to raise their family. Joe & Ruth worked and studied together to learn the insurance business and opened an office as Independent Agents in 1945.
