Franklyn Lindsey "Frankie" Scharf, 58, of Vinton, Va., passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2009.

He was a 1969 graduate of Northside High School and attended Virginia Tech. He was employed by Chesapeake Packaging Corporation for 26 years and was one of the Roanoke area's top five bowlers.

He was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Twylia Jean Scharf; daughter, Kimberly Jean Tyree and husband, Kevin Trey Tyree; son, Ronald Gene Powers and wife, Dawn Renee'; grandchildren, Elizabeth Ashley Brown, Amanda Renee Brown, Bradley Wayne Brown, and Sarah Rachel Powers; parents, Franklyn L. "Frank" and Mary L. Scharf; brother, Bill Scharf and wife, Nancy; nephews and nieces, Dr. Andrew Scharf, Ryan Scharf and fiancee, Stephanie Secagmilio, Adam Scharf, Paula Gibson and husband, Charlie, Tina Gibson, and Chris Gibson and wife, Julia; great-nephew, Jason Gibson; and his K-9 companions, Jasmine Miranda and Casey.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the American Heart Association. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2009, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. Robert Alderman. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 20, 2009, at Simpson Funeral Home, 540-366-0707.
