Col. David Emory Scales USA (Ret) of Dunedin, who proudly served his country for thirty-one years, six months and 24 days, died peacefully on October 30, 2013. Born in Marietta, GA to Raymond and Bernice Curry Scales, he enlisted in the Army shortly after graduating from Marietta High School and was sent to Korea for his first combat tour of duty. He advanced to sergeant after two years as a "buck private" and was commissioned as a second lieutenant at Fort Sill, OK where he commanded a brigade. He also served in Vietnam with the lst Infantry Division (the "Big Red One") and later as assistant secretary of the joint staff in General William Westmoreland's headquarters. Other assignments included staff officer positions in the Pentagon and Officer Personnel Directorate in Washington, D.C. and commander of the Readiness Group at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, CA. He concluded his career as Deputy Chief of Staff for the U.S. Readiness Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. His military education included Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KAN and the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA. He obtained a bachelor of business education from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and a masters degree in public administration from Shippensburg State College in PA.

Shortly after his retirement from the military in 1982, the City of Cordele, GA hired him as its City Manager. In an editorial six years later reflecting on his record as city manager, the Cordele Dispatch noted that Scales, whose "imperturbable good humor rarely deserted him," guided the City through difficult times and that "[t]he citizens are indebted to. . .[him] for his innovative procedures in sanitation management, public safety, expenditure controls and a host of other adjuncts to public services."

He was predeceased by his brothers Joseph and Robert and by his first wife Barbara (nee Smith). Survivors include his current wife, Julie; sons David Stephen (Sharon) of Newtown Square, PA; Robert Joseph (Kim) of Cocoa Beach, FL.; and his much loved grandchildren Henry, Matt, Charlie, Joey and Abigail.

Dave's remains will rest at Arlington National Cemetery where he will join his brother Joe who served as a Lieutenant Colonel in World War II. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dunedin Fine Art Association, 1143 Michigan Blvd., Dunedin, FL 34698 or the Dunedin Youth Sailing Association, P.O. Box 71, Dunedin, FL 34697.

The family thanks the staff at Arden Court of Palm Harbor for the care and kindness they provided Dave in his final months.
