Martha Sayre Anderson, 94, formerly of East Liverpool, transitioned into heaven on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013.

Born in East Liverpool in 1918, a daughter of the late Emory S. Sayre and Mary Frances Tilton Sayre Anderson, she spent most of her life in East Liverpool and a few years in Nebraska with her husband, Raymond Anderson. The last 22 years she lived at the Free Methodist Heritage Village Retirement Campus in Gerry, N.Y., which provides independent living with variable stages of life down through nursing home care.

She was a very active member of Oakland Free Methodist Church in East Liverpool for more than 50 years. Her positions there included directing the Christian Youth Crusaders (CYC) Program for children in the 1950s, serving as director of Christian Education, adult Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent and on the Pastor's Cabinet. She was one of the church organists, and she organized a group of senior citizens at the church called Keenagers. In 2002, at the church's Centennial Celebration, she and Raymond were honored for their many faithful years of service to God through the church. After moving to New York, she attended the Gerry Free Methodist Church.

She was valedictorian of her nurses training class in 1940 at East Liverpool City Hospital, where she then began work as a general duty Registered Nurse. Later, after marriage and staying home to raise their family of four children, she returned to her nursing career at the Osteopathic Hospital. She then worked with the Ohio Valley Home Health Service as a visiting nurse. She worked for pediatrician Dr. Brand and completed her nursing career there, retiring in 1984. After retirement, they enjoyed several winters in Naples, Fla.

She thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings as often as possible. She is survived by her children, Marvin and Nancy (Rudibaugh) Anderson of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Ginnie Rae (Anderson) and Roger Jarvis of Rochester, N.Y., Joan (Anderson) and John Mitchell of Wellsburg, W.Va.; and Rick and Regina (Barnhart) Anderson of East Liverpool.

There are 14 surviving grandchildren, including the spouses of each, and 21 great-grandchildren added to her happy family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Anderson, in 2006; two sisters, Erma Curtis and Virginia Torrence Kincaid; and a granddaughter, Kathy Anderson Cogar.

Friends and family may visit on Sunday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 p.m.

A memorial service reflecting on her life will be held Monday, Feb. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at Oakland Free Methodist Church. Pastor John S. Mitchell of the Penn Hills Free Methodist Church, who is also her grandson, will officiate. Pastor Mark Hunt of the Oakland Free Methodist Church will be assisting.

Burial is to follow in Columbiana County Memorial Park.
