Andrew B. Saxton

Andrew B. Saxton of Oneonta, Editor and poet, passed peacefully away Friday afternoon of last week at his cottage on Otsego Lake, where he had spent the summer. He had been in failing health for the past three years, but his condition for the past several years had been unusually good.
Andrew Bice Saxton was born April 5, 1856, in the town of Middlefield, the son of Harvey E. and Elizabeth C. (Bice) Saxton. His mother died within a day or two after his birth, and he became a member of the family of his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Bice of Westford. His early years were spent in that township and after attending the schools there he went to Hartwick Seminary, where he studied for several years.
In 1875 he started teaching, and continued his studies by himself, carrying on with Latin and modern languages, history, English, literature, and science until in 1888 he passed the examinations for a state certificate, the highest qualification for that profession. He taught at New Lisbon, Westville, and Portlandville with signal success and hosts of students will remember the stimulating force of his classroom.
In 1890, Mr. sexton was selected by the late Hon. George W. Fairchild to become editor of the Oneonta Herald, in which position he continued until his death. In May of 1912 The Herald was combined with The Star and Mr. Saxton took over the work as editorial writer and news editor with the The Star which he continued until health required the relinquishing of most of these duties about two years ago.
Throughout these years, Mr. Saxton had written poetry of consistent merit and his verse had been widely copied and published in such magazines as Scribner's, Harpers and Century. Poems of the Susquehanna, of Oneonta and of Otsego and Delaware counties which he wrote drew national attention. Several years ago the Oneonta Kiwanis club undertook to sponsor the publication of his work but because of his health the preparation of the manuscript was not completed. However, since most of his work has been published in one form or another this project may be carried on.
Besided the service Mr. Saxton rendered through his vocation and his avocation and his personal assistance and encouragement to individuals, Mr. Saxton was for more than two score years the chairman of the board of trustees of the Oneonta Library and its development, the Huntington Memorial Library.
Funeral service were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the family home, No. 11 third street, Oneonta. The Rev. N.B. Ripley of Milford, long an intimate friend of the deceased, conducted the service which was followed by interment in the family plot at the Milford Cemetery.
