Susan Talbot Sawyer Bjerkan, 82, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, July 18, 2009. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 22, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 40th and Main, Kansas City, Missouri. Burial will follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Susan was the only child born to Helen and Alverne Sawyer on December 2, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri. A lifelong Kansas City area resident, Sue graduated from Southwest High School and attended Carlton College, Northfield, Minnesota.

She met her life's love, Theodore Julian Bjerkan (Ted), on the train to Minneapolis and on April 17, 1948 they were married at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Ted and Sue raised three children in Prairie Village, Kansas and had a loving marriage for nearly fifty years, until Ted died in 1996.

Sue was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and a tireless volunteer. She was strong in her faith and an integral part of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of which she was a longtime member. She and Ted made lasting friendships through their association with the church, particularly the St. Paul's Couples Club. Sue volunteered for many organizations, including President of the St. Paul's Friday Guild, St. Paul's Rummage Sale, a lifetime member of the St. Luke's Auxiliary, La Sertoma, PTA, Brownie Scouts, and the Johnson County Voting Polls. Her passions included playing a mean hand of bridge and "Hand and Foot", her sewing group, and her love of quilting. Most importantly, her strongest passion was love for her family. Ted and Sue were early caregivers for their three grandchildren, who will always remember their "Meema" with love.

Survivors include her son James T. Bjerkan and his wife Deborah of Leawood, Kansas; daughters Kristine Lawrence and her husband Dean of Weatherby Lake, Missouri, Marsha Bjerkan of Mission Hills, Kansas; and grandchildren Julian, Erich and Lillie Bjerkan. She is also survived by her cousins Margaret Schnider and Robert Culver.

The family would like to thank Benefits of Home Senior Care, Kansas City Hospice, and The Forum at Overland Park for their kindness and compassion for Susan. (Arr: Mt. Moriah & Freeman 816-942-2004)
