WEATHERFORD - Jane Venita "Skeet" Saunders Calhoun died suddenly Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at her ranch home.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church. Dr. Tim Bruster will officiate. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: John C. Brian, Clint Calhoun, Jim Calhoun III, Lonnie Gaston, Austin Harris, Joel Haydon, Thomas Saunders V and Perry Williams. Honorary pallbearers: R.A. Cantrell Jr., John Chapman, Bob Gunn, Zack Wood, Bob Burns, Royce Bolton, Rick Ward, Floyd Wade, Steve Murrin Jr., Joe Reppeto and Tom B. Saunders IV.
Memorials: Her memory may be honored with a gift to the National Cutting Horse Association Charities, 260 Bailey Ave., Fort Worth 76107; or The Doss Heritage and Culture Center, P.O. Box 215, Weatherford 76086.
Born Nov. 3, 1932 in Tarrant County, Jane Venita Saunders was the daughter of Virginia Poindexter and Thomas Bailey Saunders III.
"Skeet" was a fifth-generation descendent of the Saunders family, a prominent cattle and ranching family and the widow of Jim Calhoun, who was past president of the National Cutting Horse Association, in the NCHA Hall of Fame and NCHA World Champion in 1957.
A lifetime member of NCHA, Skeet was a member of First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, the Junior League, Kappa Kappa Gamma, the Fort Worth Garden Club, the Salvation Army and Tarrant and North Fort Worth Historical Society.
She was also the longest life member of the Cutters in Action Foundation, Ridglea Country Club and was appointed by Gov. Preston Smith to the State Historical Survey Committee where many hours were enjoyably given.
Skeet was instrumental in founding the Junior League Historical Preservation Scrap Book and helped to save many historical landmarks around Fort Worth.
Her greatest joy was pride in all the generations of her family.
In addition to her husband, Skeet was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Bailey Saunders III.
