Walter Norman "Red" Sauls of Coeur d'Alene passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, July 26, 2008. "Red" was born in New Orleans, La., Aug. 20, 1944. After attending high school in New Orleans, he received his bachelor's degree from the Southeastern Louisiana University. After college he worked most of his life in the pharmaceutical industry (Eli Lilly, Bristol Meyers and Co.) and later as an independent businessman. Red was the first patient west of Mississippi to receive a mechanical heart (Novacor LVAD) implant for permanent therapy. Throughout his life he lived in Florida, Louisiana, Washington and Coeur d'Alene.
Red enjoyed traveling, learning about different cultures, photography, fishing, outdoors, electronics, music and the New Orleans Saints and LSU University football teams. He was strong-willed, passionate about family and has devoted much of his life to his children — keeping an interest in their future and always putting them first. Being a "man with 9 lives," he fought for many years through rough times, keeping his head up and staying positive.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jessica "Jeje" Awag Sauls, son and daughter Michael and Roxanne Sauls of Coeur d'Alene; son Reb Sauls and daughter-in-law Katie Sauls from Florida; daughter Shannon Price and son-in-law, Ryan Price from Florida and two grandsons Blake and Brody Price also from Florida. He is also survived by his brother, Emile Sauls and sister-in-law, Lynda Sauls from Florida and a sister, Peggy Wall and brother-in-law, Steve Wall from Texas.
The family wishes to thank the Mechanical Heart and Transplant Team of Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane, and all of the doctors and nurses involved in Red's health care for their unending dedication and heart-felt support.
Although he will be missed, we know he will be here in spirit.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. July 31, 2008, at the Lake City Baptist Church in Coeur d'Alene. Friends are invited to join the family at a reception following the service. The family prefers memorials be made in his name to the Lake City Baptist Church, 7610 Ramsey Road, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83815.
