Mr. Sanders died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 9, 1942, in Athens to Coleman Sockwell and Lucy Mae Sims Sanders and was adopted by Richard Sanders Sr. He was a 1960 graduate of Fisher High School, a Methodist, and was employed for 25 years at the First National Bank. He married Erma Mosley on Jan. 1, 1965.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Sanders Jr.; and one sister, Patricia Mooney.
Survivors include his wife, Erma Sanders of Athens; two sons, Gregory Sanders of Athens and Lawrence Sanders Jr. of Beaumont; two daughters, Gina Hunter and Lurna Cumby of Athens; one brother, LaCurtis Ross of Athens; two sisters, Okemah Wiggins and Mary Jones, both of Houston; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers include James Hackney, Joe H. Elam, William Smith, Ronnie Irving, William Jefferson, Lemuel Smith and Craig Crayton.
Honorary pallbearers include Jason Sanders, Marcus Sanders, Courtney Sanders, A.T. Cumby, Gregory Sanders, Anthony Sanders, Deavon Polk and Tre'Veon Graves.
Visitation will be between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
