JPS was wounded 2 times during the Civil War. He was shot through the right arm and hip. At the Battle of Malvern Hill, July 1, 1862 (severe wound) and the Skirmish at Berryville, Sept. 4, 1864 (wound). (I am not sure which wound occured first or where). He got a hernia from his hip wound and his hands frozen at Knoxville, Nov/Dec, 1863. The wounds and injuries he substained kept him from earning a support. According to his death certificate, his occupation, he was a retired farmer.
After the Civil War, JPS married Mary (Polly) Evertt in 1865. They had 8 children, only 5 lived. They homesteaded in the early 1870s in Clarke County, MS. After his wife's death around 1907-11, he went to live with his oldest son Jehu. JPS filed for his pension in 1916. When Jehu died in 1917, he went to live at BEAUVOIR CONFEDERATE VETERANS' HOME on July 1, 1917, he was 86 years old. He died there in 1927 at the age of
96 and is buried at BEAUVOIR CONFEDERATE CEMETERY.
