Elvira Mascareņas, a former resident of Chamita and then of Ohkay Owingeh, was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Robert Mascareņas; son Larry Mascareņas; parents Amadeo and Rosita Salazar; brother Arthur Salazar; sister ClaraBelle Martinez; her in-laws Pantaleon and Romanita Mascareņas; sister-in-law Mary Gonzales; brother-in-law Horace Mascareņas; and a very close nephew Edward Quintana Jr.

Elvira was survived by a son Wally Mascareņas of Chamita; daughter Janice Mascareņas of Ohkay Owingeh; her grandchildren who were very dear to her: Angelo, Gabriel, Tamara, and Alicia Abeyta, Jacobo and Marissa Mascareņas, and Sandra and Alejandro Mascareņas; sister Rosemary Lopez (husband Charles) of Rio Rancho; brother-in-law David Martinez of Velarde; a very close niece Sennie Quintana (husband Edward) of Cuarteles; sisters-in-law: Della Trujillo (husband Jerry) of Chimayo, Diedrie Valdez (husband John) of Tierra Azul; many nieces, nephews, and many other relatives & friends.

Elvira was well respected and revered by all that knew her from her days of being a cook at San Juan Elementary in the early 80's. Her strong Catholic upbringing and faith never left her. Her daily Catholic duties consisted of her praying the rosary in remembrance of all that had passed on and those that she thought needed prayer.

Public visitation and Rosary were on March 22, 2011 in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. Mass of Christian burial was on March 23, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh. Burial followed at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers: Angelo Abeyta, Gabriel Abeyta, Jacobo Mascareņas, Alejandro Mascareņas, Charles Lopez and Jerry Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers: Dean and Pam Martinez, Porfie Duran, Kevin Abeyta, Carlos Lovato, Donald Martinez, and the Velarde Valley Fire Department.
