Emma Viola Sailors was born November 19, 1888 south of Palisade, Neb., to Andrew Jackson Sailors and Anna Rebecca Heckman. She departed this life on February 20, 1987 at Ft. Morgan, Color., at the age of 98 years, 3 months and 1 day.

Emma was one of sixteen children. She attended school in the sod house school south of Palisade. Her childhood years were spent in Nebraska.

On September 10, 1911, Emma married Charles Albert Herbert. To this union seven children were born: Ada, Luva, Vern, Gene, Maxine, Irvin and Verlene.

In 1970, the children and grandchildren held an open house in celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Emma was a kind and loving mother and grandmother. She is best remembered baking sugar cookies for grandkids and tending her chickens. Her house was always alive in the springtime with the peeps of baby chicks.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles; a son, Gene; a grandson, Dallas Bell; a granddaughter, Lavern Ann; and a great granddaughter, Melissa.

She leaves to mourn her passing her children, Ada Bell of Hudson, Colo.; Luva Teeters of Ft. Morgan, Colo.; Vern of Palisade, Maxine Holland of Culbertson, Irvin of Remer, Minn.; and Verlene Herbert of Ludell, Kan.; 16 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and several great great grandchildren.

Graveside services were held February. 23 at 11:00 a.m. CST at the Palisade Cemetery at Palisade. Officiating was the Rev. Duane Egle.

Creveling Funeral Home, Ltd., of Wauneta was in charge of arrangements.
