Shirley Ann Travis, 77, of Holyoke, died of pneumonia Saturday, March 22, 2008.

She is survived by her husband Thomas Stanley Travis, her first son Thomas Lee Travis and his wife Laura, her daughter Lanette Marie Travis Reece and her husband Robert and her second son Jon Walter Travis and his wife Sandra; 11 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Shirley was born to Walter and Esther (Brase) Sagehorn in Holyoke August 2, 1930. She was both baptized (August 11, 1930) and confirmed (April 2, 1944) in Zion Lutheran Church.

She has two older sisters, Darlene Hagemann, who married Lowell "Shorty" Hagemann, and Lillian Lindgren, who married Dewey Lindgren.

Shirley graduated from Holyoke High School in 1948 and married Stanley Travis on September 12, 1948. Living on various farms in the Holyoke area, Shirley gave birth to her three children. In 1961 the family moved to Brush, and in 1967 to Fort Morgan.

She received a B.A. degree in English from Colorado State College in 1965 and a master's in reading from the University of Colorado in 1973.

She began teaching in 1965 and taught high school at Brush, Fort Morgan and Holyoke until 1998. She also taught courses at Northeastern and Morgan County Junior Colleges.

Shirley had a lifelong love of teaching, of reading and of watching her students, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow. In addition to being a lifelong teacher, Shirley served as an education lobbyist for many years, staying involved with educational groups. As a parent and grandparent, she was a quiet conscience asking her progeny to find and do the right thing.

Funeral service was scheduled at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke Wednesday, March 26 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Gary Rahe officiating.

Interment was to follow at Holyoke Memorial Park.
