Birth: Aug. 13, 1840
Death: Feb. 23, 1916

Sgt. Benjamin Franklin Royse, age 75, died last Saturday evening at his home on Lake street, after a long illness, due to many complications of diseases. He was married 57 years ago to Miss Elvira Hargett, who, with their ten children, forty-five grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren survive him. It is remarkable that, during his life, there was never a crepe hung on his door in memory of a departed one. He served as a Federal soldier during the four years of the Civil War and he desired, at his death, that his coffin be wrapped in the old flag he loved so well. His request was granted and Old Glory was buried with him to await the great reveille, when the sounding of "taps" will end "over there." Rev. Mr. Reagan conducted the funeral services at the Methodist, (now Episcopal) church Sunday afternoon, thence burial in Maple Grove cemetery. His surviving sons are Basil Royse, of Richmond; William and John Royse, of Brannon; Samuel Royse, of Nicholasville; George Royse, of New Albany, Indiana; Charles Royse, of Muskegan, Michigan; and Samson Royse, of Dayton. His daughters are: Mrs. Lizzie Estes, of Lexington; Mrs. Frank Ball, of Woodford Co; Mrs. Mary Fry, of Middletown, Ohio. His six sons acted as pallbearers, (03-03-16 issue of The Jessamine Journal)
