Funeral services for Carolyn Rowden Elmore, 82, West Plains, Mo., were held Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church, West Plains, Mo., under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Mrs. Elmore died at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, in Brooke Haven HealthCare.
She was born Jan. 19, 1926, in Mammoth Spring, Ark., to Lucien Shelby and Willie Estelle Martin Rowden. She graduated from West Plains High School with the class of 1943, where she was active in music and drama. She also attended State Teacher's College, now Missouri State University, where she studied business and art.
On Jan. 23, 1948, she was united in marriage to Gerald Ellington Elmore who preceded her in death on March 21, 2008. Carolyn was a faithful employee of Howell-Oregon Electric for 38 years, where she was an accountant and served as plant and property supervisor.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church since she was 12 years old. She served her church as a Sunday school teacher, youth director, member of the board of trustees and staff-parish relations committee. She was also a member of the Elizabeth Group of the United Methodist Women where she served as President for four years. She was the recipient of the United Methodist Women Special Recognition Pin in 1993. Carolyn was also a member of the Chancel Choir for 64 years, and a long-time member of the Ozarks Festival Choir.
Other activities include Friends of the Garnett Library, where she served as president for two years, West Plains Grizzly Booster Club, PEO Sisterhood, Chapter CM and her beloved Thursday night domino group.
Carolyn was also a talented artist whose work will be enjoyed for years to come. She was also an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing until macular degeneration robbed her of much of her eyesight.
She is survived by her daughter, Terrianne Woody, Springfield, Mo.; two grandchildren, Whitnie (Woody) Norton and husband, Seth, Kansas City, Kan., and McKenzie Woody, Springfield, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Bea Rowden and Joy Young; three brothers-in-law, Gilbert Elmore and wife, Mackie, Tom Elmore and wife, Yvonne, and Jerry Elmore and wife, Ann; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents, husband, and brother, William James Rowden, precede her in death.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the many devoted friends who helped her through her long illness; also, the doctors, staff and caregivers at Brooke Haven HealthCare and the nurses at Riverways Hospice.
Burial was at Oak Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 503 West Main, West Plains, Mo., 65775 and left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
