Permane E. Rothrock was the sixth of nine known children of Joel Rothrock (1808-1879) and Susanna (went by Susan) Clodfelter Rothrock (1814-1891), who married 25 Mar 1834 at Davidson County, North Carolina. The family moved from North Carolina to the Moravian community of West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois in 1843.
Permane served with Company I, 66th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. After the war Permane married Lora A. Hinkle (her parents also from North Carolina) (1853-1924) on 13 Jun 1875 at West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois. Permane and Lora were the parents of nine known children, namely:
1. Charles Joel Rothrock (1876-1925)
2. Thomas Henry (or Howard?) Rothrock (1877-1952)
3. Clark Rothrock (1879-1881)
4. Katie Rothrock (1881-1882)
5. Oliver Wendell Rothrock (1883-1924)
6. Etta May Rothrock Shuler (1885-1973)
7. Earl Rothrock (1887-1889)
8. Lemon Rothrock (1890-1891)
9. Vaden Ridens Rothrock (1870-???)
The last child was said to be adopted by the Rothrock family. Nothing is known of her.
In 1880 Permane, Lora and the first three children (Charles, Thomas and Clark) were living at West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois with Permane listed as a farmer. In 1900 Permane, Lora and children Charles, Oliver and Etta were living at Salem Township, Edwards County, Illinois. The son Thomas was living away from home. Lora said she was the mother of eight, four living, thus not including Vada. In 1910 the parents and daughter Etta were living at Osceola County, Florida. In 1920 the parents were living alone at St. Cloud, Osceola County, Florida. Permane died at the home of his married daughter Etta Rothrock Shuler.
