Sarah Ross Crane

Birth: unknown
Death: Feb. 3, 1787

Born Sarah Ross c.1724, Mrs. Crane died in the "63d Year of her Age", a victim of "consumption". She was the widow of Jonathan Crane, who had died seven years earlier. The couple were the parents of a large family, including a son, John, who fought and died for the American cause during the Revolutionary War.
Mrs. Crane's brown sandstone stele, with its pleasing symmetry, soul effigy, and floral & vine motif, appears to be the work of noted stonecarver David Jeffries. It often catches the eyes of passers-by because it bears the inscription "purchased by Ichabod Crane", evoking images of Washington Irving's hapless schoolmaster and the Headless Horseman in the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow". This real-life Ichabod Crane was another of Sarah's and Jonathan's sons, however, and had purchased the Crane gravestone next to hers as well. "Anonymous" GRAVESTONE PHOTO by Nikita Barlow
