Literary Figure. He was author Oscar Wilde's beloved and devoted friend. A member of one of Canada's most distinguished families, Ross came to England in his teens to finish his education at Cambridge. Reportedly introduced Oscar Wilde to Wilde's first homosexual affair while Ross was only 17 and Wilde a married man of 33. This affair evolved into a great friendship and Ross was made by Wilde his literary executor. In his own right, Ross was an art critic, art dealer, and established a scholarship for art students. After Wilde's death, Ross was harassed and persecuted by Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas (one time lover of Oscar) who had renounced Wilde and homosexuality. Ross is the subject of Jonathan Fryer's biography, "Robbie Ross: Oscar Wilde's Devoted Friend." Ross was cremated and the urn with his remains was interred beside those of Wilde's in Wilde's monument in the Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise, in Paris.
