KIMBERLING CITY, Mo. — Freda M. Rock, 89, Kimberling City, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family on June 19, 2009, in Kimberling City.
She was born July 22, 1919, in Bloomfield, Neb., daughter of Rose and Henry Rohwer.
She graduated from Lafayette High School and attended both the St. Joseph Junior College and Missouri Western State College.
She married Joseph Rock June 19, 1939, in St. Joseph, and passed away on her 70th wedding anniversary.
She was a Realtor for many years in St. Joseph, and was a member of the Missouri Realtor Association, prior to her real estate career she owned and operated Marion's Tavern, the Cottage Grill Restaurant. She was a member of the American Business Woman's Association, the PTA, St. Mary's Altar Society and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Grandmother, (Oops, I mean Aunt Freda — she hated being called Grandma) was not your cookie baking, story telling, warm and fuzzy type of Grandma. She was more of a CEO. She was proud, independent, intelligent and self confident.
Just because she wasn't warm and fuzzy didn't mean she didn't love her family, she just had different ways of showing it. Rising at 5:30 or 6 a.m., she had to have that first cup of coffee and her newspaper. After reading the paper and finishing the crossword puzzle, she waited for the rest of the world to wake up. After getting her family off to work and school, she began her day. Whether it was working in her garden, doing volunteer work, rehabbing a rental property, or managing one of her businesses, she always kept busy.
Although she was proud and independent, it didn't mean she was afraid to pick up a hammer or a paint brush. Grandma (I mean Aunt Freda) was very frugal and yet wasn't afraid to spend money. Spending money on her family wasn't a problem, particularly if she was getting a bargain. She loved garage sales, gardening, buying and selling antiques and rehabbing houses. Her interests were as diverse as her work day was long.
After losing her husband, Joe, in 1973, Freda assumed a totally new role in her life, that of bread winner. Grandpa had always been her business partner and more vocal in public. Together, they were very successful in a variety of ventures. After her life partner passed away, Grandma entered the real estate market. She did not enter gently. Within a few years, she was well known in that field. Wheeling and dealing properties, much like the Monopoly board game, must have appealed to her CEO nature.
No relative or friend ever was left without their own home. If there was a way, Freda made sure it happened. Many times loaning her own funds for the down payment, the relative or friend got their home. Known as a tough negotiator and successful business woman, Grandma managed the Pembroke Apartment complex. She loved the complexity and challenges that such a position provided. Even as she got older, she was not afraid to assume new roles. In her early 70s, she accepted a position as a house mother for a sorority at the University of Mississippi despite never having done anything like that previously. She had no fear. Freda was always ready for a new challenge.
Grandma began to lose her vision in her early 80s. It was an extremely difficult challenge. She really missed that newspaper and crossword puzzle. She became active in blind causes and activities. She was courageous and confident.
Goodbye Grandma. (I mean Aunt Freda) We miss you.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Joseph Rock; three brothers, Gaylen, Glenn and Lyle Rohwer; and a sister, Vivian Eaton.
Survivors include daughter, Kathryn Roster, Kansas City, Mo., daughter, Joyce O'Meara and husband Ted, St. Joseph, son, John Rock and fiancé Mary Huey, St. Joseph, daughter, Josie Huffman and husband Dr. John Huffman, Kimberling City, son, Mike Rock and wife Terri, Kansas City, daughter, Cookie Rock, St. Joseph, son, Charlie Rock, St. Joseph; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 9 a.m. Thursday with a Mass of Commemoration to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Joseph, Fr. Shawn Ratigan will be the Celebrant. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery, St. Joseph.
