(Guymon Daily Herald, Tuesday, September 10th, 1974, Page 10)Lola Edna Allen was the third of four daughters born to Joseph and Edith Rogers. She was born July 25, 1897, at Shell Knob, Missouri, and passed away September 8, 1974 at the Kiowa, Kansas hospital.
At the age of six weeks she was taken by her parents and grandparents to Belmont, Pottawatomie County, in what was then Indian Territory, where the family rented a farm. In 1906, she and an older sister traveled three weeks by wagon with their father to Guymon. Mrs. Rogers and infant daughter made the trip by train and the family homesteaded land in the Shelton (Eva) community northwest of Guymon.
Their first home was a half-dugout which was later enlarged and remodeled into a 2-room frame home. Lola worked alongside her parents in the fields and was responsible for rounding up their small herd of cattle. As she remembered, their one real fear in those years was prairie fire and a main aggravation were the sand fleas.
She attended the Anchor D school and graduated from high school at Guymon. In 1916, she was married in a ceremony at her parent's home to Jesse Leon Allen, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Allen of the Hough community. The young couple moved to Guymon where a daughter, Iris, and a son, Robert Leon, were born to them.
She was a member of the First Christian Church from those early days and gave tirelessly of her time and abilities in many capacities. She was a member of the Mary Martha Group, Clover Leaf Club, Guymon Order of Eastern Star, Mystic Rebekah Lodge, and the Inter Se Club.
In 1940, Mrs. Allen bought a cabin at Cuchara, Colo. There she and her family spent many happy days and her love for the mountains and appreciation of the many beauties of nature were imparted to her children and grandchildren. With tender care for as long as she was able, she carefully tended her yard and raised beautiful roses and many other flowers.
Through the years, she spent untold hours piecing, quilting, knitting, and crocheting, and the many quilts, afghans, bedspreads, and tablecloths she made are cherished by her family and others.
In 1967, Mrs. Allen moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where she made her home until October, 1973, when she moved to Cherokee, Okla., to make her home with her daughter.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bessie Mae in 1896, Cora Ethel (Mrs. Ray Higgins) in 1927, her parents, and one granddaughter. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Letha Kennedy of Citrus Heights, Calif.; her daughter, Mrs. Iris Helms of Cherokee, Okla.; her son, Robert Allen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren, Mrs. Sandra (Allen) Perkins of Guymon, Blake Allen of Colorado Springs, Mrs. Judi (Brecheen) Lewis of Hazelton, Kan., and Allen Helms of Colorado Springs, and three great-grandchildren, Chris, Julie, and Laurie Perkins of Guymon.
We who loved her shall miss her dearly, but this writer finds comfort in a quote from Helen Keller—"Our beloved ones have not 'gone to a far country'; it is only the veil of sense that separates them from us, and even that veil grow thin when our thoughts reach out to them."
