Gladys Mae Rogers

Services for Gladys Mae Rogers will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 26th, 2006 at the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. Father Paul Eichhoff will be officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday, May 25th, 2006 from 88. Gladys passed away on Saturday, May 20th, 2006. She was 88.
Born April 4th, 1918 at Chandler, OK to Walter and Esther McConnell Coombs, Gladys was first reared and educated in her birth community. Following a move to Chickasha she completed the 8th grade and continued her high school education at Central High School in Oklahoma City graduating with the class of 1935. During her high school years, Gladys was a member of the National Honor Society.
In 1937, Gladys and Matthew Allen Rogers were united in marriage and to this union two sons were born. The couple made their first home in Oklahoma City and moved to the Muskogee area in 1942. She worked for the Army at Camp Gruber in Braggs as a supply clerk. Then Gladys worked for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance for a short time before beginning to work for the VA Regional Office. In 1951 she went to work for the Department of Interior and later began working for the VA Hospital. Gladys was transferred to Washington D.C. and became a computer programmer for the VA Control Office. After working for the government for 30 years, Gladys retired in 1977 and moved to Broken Arrow. She later moved to Claremore and this has been home since.
Gladys' favorite pastime was bowling. She had her bowling card for 47 years and traveled all over the United States to compete. Her family accompanied her on these trips and was always there to cheer her on. She was the State Secretary for the Oklahoma Women's Bowling Association for 10 years. Gladys had her own genealogy newsletter which she dedicated many hours to.
This wonderful woman leaves many treasured memories with her beloved family. Those loving family members who survive include her son Jerry Rogers and wife Janet of Claremore; her grandchildren Chris Ross, Jeff Ross, Leighann Cordova, Roxanne Burch, Robert Rogers, Grover Rogers and Terry Rogers; her 7 great grandchildren; her sister Mary Golding and husband Dick of Heber Springs, AR; her sister-in-law Anna Sue Coombs of Bixby and 3 nieces and 4 nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her son Earl Rogers and her brother Leo Coombs.
