October 16, 1944 - September 27, 2013 NEWALLA Carolyn Faye Slane departed this life peacefully in her sleep Friday, September 27, 2013. She is now in Heaven. Carolyn Slane was one of four children born to Kenneth and Willa Rodebush. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Kenneth Rodebush; her daughter-in-law, Susan Ringer-Slane; and her brother-in-law, John Cole. Carolyn graduated Olive High School. She was raised by her parents and her grandfather, Otis Rodebush, of Shamrock, OK. Carolyn met her lifelong best friend, Larry Slane, and the couple married 47 years ago. They raised their sons in Oklahoma City before moving to the Harrah/Newalla area. Along with family and close friends, Carolyn's husband, children, and grandchildren were her life. She loved each of them dearly and routinely stated how proud she was of her family. Carolyn's life was marked by sacrifice of herself and service to others. She will be remembered by her unwavering commitment to her sons and grandchildren who are left with the tender memories of her presence in their lives. Despite many challenges and difficulties brought on by poor health, Carolyn persevered in her loving dedication to family. Carolyn's pride in her family was evident in the countless stories she told of her children, grandchildren, and their babies. She never left her husband's side, and the two were together helping their son on the day before her unexpected passing. Known as Nana to her grandchildren, Carolyn took a quiet but encouraging back seat to all, loved them fully, and never failed to speak tender words of encouragement throughout their young lives. Her favorite activities were visiting her sons and grandchildren, listening to Gospel music, working crossword puzzles and drinking Dr. Pepper. Carolyn worked steadily throughout her life in the food service field as an employee of various cafeterias such as Anna Maude Cafeteria, OKC Public Schools, Globe Life Insurance, and the federal courthouse. After working for a cafeteria whose policy was service to Whites only, Carolyn Slane proudly offered her service to civil rights leader Clara Luper and felt gratified that, in her own way, she had contributed to the end of segregation in Oklahoma City. Carolyn will be terribly missed and dearly loved by her family and friends. Funeral services will be graveside at the Shamrock Cemetery in Shamrock, Oklahoma, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Flowers and cards can be sent to Don Smith Funeral Home at 405 W. Broadway, Drumright, OK 74030, Tel. (918) 352-2536.
