In November 1853 he married Araminta J. Watkins daughter of Dr. Christopher Watkins of Anson County. Some of the children were T. C. Robinson, Jennie W. Robinson, E. C. Robinson, Frank P. Robinson, and M. Marie Robinson. Araminta died in 1881. He married again in October 1883 to Harriet A. Coleman of Edgefield County, South Carolina. They had one child Sallie Berry Robinson.
He attended school in Anson County and finished his education at Davidson College. He was a farmer and won many prizes for his cotton growing. He served as Magistrate of Anson County. In 1887 he was elected Commissioner of Agriculture of North Carolina.
