At the age of 18 on April 1, 1861, Edmund volunteered with the 9th Indiana Infantry.Co. H for 3 months. On May 24, 1861 Edmund contracted measles. He returned to duty May 27. Edmund was mustered out July 29, 1861 in Indianapolis,In. Edmund reenlisted Aug.27, 1861 back into the 9th for 3 years and went to western Virginia.
On the 10th of Oct. 1861, Edmund developed protracted pneumoniaa after a fatiquing march over the mountains from Camp Elk Water to Cheat Summit a distance of ten miles. All of this march was done in a terrible rain and sleet storm during which the troops had no tents or other shelter.
This storm commenced on the evening of the 26th of Sept 1861 and continued for 48 hrs. One man and 32 animals died of exposures of the elements and there was great suffering among all the men. With no time to recuperate the men fought in the Battle of Greenbrier on Oct. 3th and 4th of 1861. Edmund was discharged from the unit on Nov 16 1861 on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability.
On July 2 1862 Edmund and his father John G ( who died from a gun shot May 12, 1864 at the Battle of Spotsylvania) volunteered for the 20th Indiana Infantry Co. I. After the seven day battle in Virginia ( Called the seven days of hell ) Edmund went to the hospital.On the 10th of Sept 1862 Edmund was discharged.
Following that stint, on the 24th of Aug 1863, Edmund and brother Sumner T.( Sumner was a coporal and during a skirmish was shot throught the shoulder ) volunteered for the 7th Indiana Cavalry, Co.A Edmund enlisted as a sergeant and was promoted to 1st sergeant on the promotion of Charles H Gleason to 2nd lieutenant. On Feb 22 1864 at the battle near Okolona Ms. near sundown the 7th was ordered to charge. During the charge Edmunds horse was killed and while he was down a rebal soldier stuck at Edmunds head with butt of his musket Edmund threw his head back and caught the blow on the left side of his chest breaking his ribs.
In Aug 1864 Edmund was transferred to Co.C same regiment.While Edmund was out with small scouting party near Mt. Pleasent in the summer of 1865 he was shot in the small finger and grazed two places on his left leg. On Aug 9th 1865 Edmund was admitted to the U.S. Hospital Steamer D.A. January. Aug. 18 1865. Edmund was transferred to the U.S. General Hospital at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri with enteric fever. Then on the 9th of Nov 1865 Edmund was transferred to Marine General Hospital at St. Louis Missouri. Edmund retured to duty on Dec 13, 1865.
In New Orleans La. Jan 7 1866 Edmund was dischared from the service by special order No 7. At his discharge he was pale, thin, coughing up blood and was a broken man.
After his discharge Edmund retured to Valparaiso, Indiana, worked on the family farm and lived with his aunt for a few years before moving on to Albion, Iowa on Jan 1868.
On Jan 1869 Edmund moved to Jamesburg NJ and worked as assistant superintendent at the state reform school and then on Oct 1870 Edmund moved to Brooklyn NY.
