Charles served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on F-5A #42-12680, 17th Squadron, 4th Photographic Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Gwinnett County, Georgia prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 12, 1941 at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a stationary engineer and also as Single, without dependents.
Charles took off from Fighter 2 (Kukum Field), Guadalcanal Province, Solomon Islands on a solo photographic and visual search over Buka Island, Bougainville Province, Papua New Guinea. After takeoff he was not seen or heard from again.
Charles was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
