Rev. Norman W. Ritterling, of Defiance, entered the Church Triumphant on the morning of September 6, 2013.
Born at home on June 24, 1928, in Byron, Nebraska, Norman was the son of Werner and Sophia (Hoops)
Ritterling. Norman was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Byron, Neb., and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Byron. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon Township, where he was granted Pastor Emeritus status by the Association of American Lutheran Churches.
After attending Peru State Teachers College, he taught in one-room schools in the towns, Chester and Byron, Neb. Norman attended Midland College in Fremont, Neb., before transferring to Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, from which he received his bachelor's degree. Following college graduation, Norman entered Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, and earned the four-year Master of Divinity degree. Following his ordination in 1956, he served in a three-congregation parish in Missouri for three years and a parish in Wyandotte, Michigan, for a total of 10 years. He then served a parish in Napoleon, Ohio, for 30 more years. Norman retired from the parish ministry in 1995.
Rev. Ritterling served on the Lutheran Homes Society Board and the education board of the Central District of the old American Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Myrna; his daughters, Ruth Blake and Margaret Beach; his sons-in-law, Jon and Marc; and three grandchildren, Dr. Katie Beach of Aurora, Ohio, Sarah Haney of Houston, Texas, and Christopher Beach of Tallahassee, Florida.
Calling hours will be Monday, September 9, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church, starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 10, 2013, in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon Township, at 10 a.m., with Rev. Dean Stoner officiating. Burial will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
