The daughter of the late Frances Kemp Riley and Wilkin Welman Riley, she was born January 11, 1922 in Beatrice, Alabama.
Marrying Phares G. Vick in May 1945, they began a military career which brought them to Columbia in 1962. Here they remained until their deaths.
Melba was proceeded in death by her husband, Major P.G. Vick on May 1, 1970; a brother, Welman Riley and a great-grandson, Benjamin Buckner.
She is survived by daughters, Patricia Shinn, Phyllis Ferguson and husband, Dr. Robert B. Ferguson; sons, Phares G. Vick, Jr., and Edmond R. Vick; sisters, Placidia Lackey and Cynthia Stone; also left to keep her memory are 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service at Greenlawn Memorial Park Sunday, May 2 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Thom C. Jones will officiate. The family will greet friends after the service.
The family would like to thank Dr. Steven Madden for his loving care over the years. We would also like to thank her many friends who have always been there with love, food and attention.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Melba 's memory be honored by a contribution to the American Lung Association or your favorite charity.
