He served in World War II as a medical corpsman attached to the Combat Engineers, stationed in the Philippines. Before and after the war, he attended Vincennes University and Ball State University, where he attained a master's degree in education. He pursued a 40-year career in teaching, including Central High School and Northrop High School, instructing over 6,000 students in Chemistry and Physics before retiring in 1986, and as a substitute teacher for another 10 years. He is a charter member of the Northrop High School Quarter Century Club, where he is well remembered for his many poems, parodies, and songs about academic life. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church for the past 65 years where he served on the first ever school board, pastoral council, and many other ministries. He had a deep and abiding faith and lived it out accordingly. Having survived the great depression, World War II, and being an avid reader and student of history, he was a man of many stories, which he told well and often. Most important to Bernie was family. He has a large immediate and extended family which he loved spending time with and is beloved and admired by all. He would do anything for family and friends in need.
Surviving is his sister, Mildred (aka Mickey) Liparoto of Columbus, Ga., sons, Michael E. (Karen) Richardville, Steven P. (Eva) Richardville, John D. Richardville and Daniel J. (Katie) Richardville; son-in-law, David Bireley; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
