One of the organizers of the famous Seventh New York State Militia in 1823.

A pioneer of Adams County, first arriving in 1834 to claim a government allotment of 200 acres, returning to New York for a short while, and returning to Beverly township in 1835. He was a farmer.

He married Charlotte Wood in New York June 30, 1825, and eight children were born to them:

Emma M
Phebe M
George Ann

Charlotte died in November, 1845,

On October 1, 1846, he married Elizabeth Wood, of Quincy. They had one child, Charles Richardson.
Elizabeth died December 23, 1872.

At his death he was survived by six children, thirty-three grandchildren and fifty-two great grandchildren.

He was known as "Uncle Jimmy" to all. He was also known for his frequent trips from Beverly township to Quincy and to New York city to visit friends.
