HELEN R. CAMPBELL
Helen Campbell, 72 of Gulf Breeze, Fla. was called home to be with the Lord and passed into a new life on Sunday, December 23, after a two and half year courageous journey with cancer.
Helen was born in Fort Pierce, Fla. on August 22, 1935. She was preceded in death by her father, William F. Richards; mother Florrie Richards and one sister, Betty Ptacek. A native of her beloved state of Florida, Helen's great grandfather, Capt Richards sailed from New Jersey to homestead south Fla. in the 1880's when it was wilderness occupied by Seminole Indians.
She was the mother of two wonderful children, Dr Michael Campbell and Dr Deborah Campbell Murray. Her maternal care and guidance were instrumental in their careers and their faith.
Survivors include her loving husband, Howard; son, Michael and wife Charlene of Mobile, AL, with four beloved grandchildren, Lauren (husband Hanno Vanderbijl), Andrew, Taylor and Katie; daughter, Deborah and husband Chris Murray of Charlottesville, Virginia; a brother, Bill Richards of Claremont, Calif.
Helen attended the Univ. of Fla and soon married a fellow student Howard, later known as 'Soupy' in the military. They had known each other since kindergarten in Fort Pierce, FL. After marrying Soupy, she enjoyed 52 years of marriage, many traveling the world as an Air Force wife. She can be remembered for her generous heart and her delight in cooking for her family and friends. Although she held several retail jobs, her passion in life was her role as a committed wife and mother. Helen was a generous and active volunteer. She was a lead chaperone for the Choctaw HS Style Marchers band in Ft Walton Beach during the 1970s; and as a Gulf Breeze Hospital Auxiliary volunteer, she co-managed the hospital gift shop for many years. She was a member of the Gulf Isle Neighbors group and the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be held for family at Barrancas National Cemetery at NAS Pensacola. A celebration of her life will be held 11:30, Friday, December 28, at the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church. The Rev. Neil Epler will be officiating.
Honorary pallbearers who are dear friends will be: Len Contarino, Connie Hoffman, Wayne Ivey, Jack Scott and John Wilkins.
In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, 75 Fairpoint Dr, GB, FL 32561, or to the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Fla., www.ocaf.org in Helen's memory.
