JOSEPH E. RICH FUNERAL HELD WEDNESDAY
SON OF COLONIZER OF BEAR LAKE SECTION OF IDAHO AND EARLY PIONEER OF ASHLEY VALLEY, BURIED AT VERNAL CEMETERY, OPERATED COAL MINE IN ASHLEY VALLEY FOR NEARLY HALF CENTURY.
Impressive funeral rites were held at the vernal First Ward Chapel, Wednesday for Joseph E. Rich, 63 who succumbed Monday afternoon following an illness of more than a year. The casket was bedded in wreaths of beautiful floral offerings. Bishop Pontha Calder conducted.
"Abide With Me" was the opening selection by a double mixed quartet, accompanied by Mrs. Mable Stag. Stake Clerk Charles Hardy gave the opening prayer. "Come Unto Jesus" was the second selection by the quartet consisting of Mrs. Mae Calder, Mrs. Mae Jorgensen, Helen Calder, Meda Walker, Harold E. Davis, Lloyd Winn, Carl O. Davis and William B. Wallis.
Ernest Eaton and Driver E. Smith were the speakers. They told of his unselfish work in the community as a pioneer of his father Charles C. Rich, one of the first settlers of Utah and a colonizer of the Bear Lake County in Idaho. They referred to the responsibility of the present generation to carry on the splendid traditions of their ancestors. "Sometime, Somewhere" was sung by a ladies quartet and the concluding selection was "through Deepening trials" by the mixed quartet.
The benediction was pronounced by Bishop Calder. Interment was in the Vernal Cemetery where the grave was dedicated by Warren Richardson. The pallbearers were Charles, Clyde, Loren, Sam and Alva Hatch and Reed Rich.
Joseph Edwin Rich son of Charles Coulson and Jane Susanna Stock Rich was born February 13, 1870 at Paris Idaho. He married Louisa Pool Hatch daughter of Alvah Alexander and Mary Elizabeth Nelson Hatch both of Vernal, early pioneers March 7, 1889 at Vernal.
Surviving are three brothers and three sisters; John Rich, Boise, Idaho; Charles rich, Vernal, Utah; Arthur rich, Price, Utah; Mrs. Clara Johnson, Long Beach, California; Mrs. Libby Sabe, San Francisco, California; Mrs. George Young, Gusher, Three daughters and three sons: Mrs. Mark Cook, Smartsville, California; Alva Fich, Long Beach, California; John Rich, Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Mary Pope, Moab, Utah; Reed and Mont rich and Mrs. Mary Freeman, Vernal.
Mr. Rich has been a prominent coal miner in Vernal for nearly half a century. The mine he operated for so many years is now owned by H.H. Norgard.
His father was called to colonize the Bear Lake section in Southeastern Idaho in the early days, under the direction of President Brigham Young. These pioneers went to this section and built up one of the finest agricultural areas in the intermountain west. Reunions of the family are held each year on the shores of Bear Lake attended by hundreds of descendants.
