Obituary

Loretta Rose Morrison (S-Wood)
(May 26, 1929 - March 9, 2011)

Loretta Rose Rice Morrison was born on May 26, 1929 to Fredrick Henry and Veronica Mary Rice at their home in Minco, Oklahoma. She was the fourth of six children. Loretta contracted polio at 15 months of age, which affected her throughout her life including summers in isolation, back and ankle surgeries, and a tolerance for pain that most of us could never understand. Most of all, Loretta possessed an inner strength that we all admired. Loretta married the best looking guy in Union City, Oklahoma, Don Favorite Morrison, on May 2, 1951 at St. Joseph Catholic Church where they met as children, though they never dated until college. Though she had many reasons to live life on the sidelines, Loretta embraced life as a full-time medical technologist and mom, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and a volunteer at school activities for her children and grandchildren. She used her sewing talents to make vests for the entire Y Indian Guide Tribe, tuba covers for her grandson, Brett’s band, bridesmaid dresses for Claudia’s wedding, a rifle uniform for Barbara, beach towels, cover-ups, curtains, comforters, corn bags, and crocheted receiving blankets that were treasured by anyone fortunate enough to receive one. Her struggle ended peacefully on March 9, 2011 surrounded by her children. She now dances in heaven unencumbered by her earthly physical limitations. Loretta is survived by her two sons: Don Morrison Jr. and wife Kathy of Broken Arrow, Doug Morrison and wife Stacey of Tulsa; her three daughters: Claudia Gardner and husband Ray of Broken Arrow, Roni Taylor of Broken Arrow, and Barbara Sanders of Muskogee. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two sisters: Lorene Wehling and husband Pat of Albuquerque, Carlene Sanders and husband Marvin of Arlington and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, her parents, and her brothers, Freddie, Frank, and Charlie Rice. The family would like to express their gratitude to all the family and friends who have shared in Loretta’s life.
