RIO HONDO/HARLINGEN, TX. - Pauline "Polly" Coston
Surrounded by her loving family, crossed the River Jordon on Sunday, May 17, 2009 and joined her beloved husband and daughter and a host of others gone before her to begin her long-awaited eternal life with Jesus.
A quiet Southern belle from the rolling green hills of Virginia, Polly was born October 26, 1916, in Roanoke, Virginia to parents Frances Lillian Draper Rettinger and Elijah David Rettinger. Moving as a young child to Salem, Virginia, Polly played among apple orchards and swam in cool creeks while her father developed businesses spanning three states in the 1940's canning industry. It was while visiting one of these canning factories in Rio Hondo, Texas that she fell in love with and married a wonderful man whom she had known for eight days, Thomas Lebert Coston. Together they lived happily for 51 years. They were blessed with two daughters, Carolyn Phyllis Anderson and Elizabeth Claire Jennings.
While adapting to her new homeland and culture of South Texas farming life, Polly created a Christian home of love and devotion to God, family, church, and community. She was a woman whose deep faith and calm strength nurtured all who knew her, as she adopted her father's legacy to journal in her Bible, reading it through in its entirety six times.
Polly and Lebert Coston's years together were a "daily marvel of tender care" and attention to every need of their daughters and grandchildren. A gifted seamstress, Polly made wedding gowns for her daughters and granddaughters. The Costons are remembered lovingly as parents and grandparents who saw persons with their hearts. Their strong faith and courage sustained them as they provided daily care of their daughter, Carolyn, and her family, for the six years of Carolyn's terminal illness.
Carolyn died in 1985, and was followed in death by her father in 1989.
Moving to Golden Palms in 1994 to be near her devoted daughter and constant companion Elizabeth, Polly continued to exemplify fortitude and grace through her later years of medical confinement.
Remaining to hold dear to joyful memories of their beloved mother, grand and great, are daughter Elizabeth Jennings and husband, Ralph, who became the son Polly always cherished, and their children Melanie Kristen Sheubrooks of Tampa, Florida; Richard Thomas Sheubrooks and wife, Kristin of Atlanta, Georgia; Trey Jennings and son, Chance of Harlingen, Texas; and Anne Jennings Bowling and husband, Bill, and children, Blake and Holly, of Dallas, Texas; and the children of Carolyn Phyllis Anderson, Kevin Anderson and wife, Linda, and their children, Eric and Hannah of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Angie Curry and husband, Clint and their children, Kelsey and Chase of Calallen, Texas; Cindy Dunn and husband, Gary, and their children, Caroline and Casey, of Houston, Texas, as well as many relatives and friends.
Viewing will be at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Thursday, May 21, 2009 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family in attendance between 6 and 8 in the evening.
Private interment will take place at Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito, Texas, located on Coston Road, on which Polly and Lebert lived their entire married life. The Reverend Gene Horton will preside at the graveside service.
