A graveside service for CW4 Adolphus Downman 'A.D.' Reed, U.S. Army (Ret.), 91, will be held 2 p.m. Monday, January 3, 2011, in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.
CW4 Reed passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Born in Glendora, Miss., he was a son of the late John C. Reed Sr. and Lucile Wilburn Reed.
Mr. Reed spent his childhood in Alabama. Upon graduation from Uniontown High School, he spent several years in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Tillamook, Oregon, followed by a career in the U.S. Army. His Army career took him to England, Japan, Korea and many areas of the United States. He retired at Fort Jackson and then enjoyed a second career with the federal government from which he also retired. Mr. Reed's interests included gardening, woodworking, exercise, pets and spending time with his family.
He was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church where he thoroughly enjoyed the senior citizen's weekly 'Lunch Bunch.' He was also a member of the American Legion.
Surviving are his daughter, Regina Reed Serio (Sam A.); son, Lt. Col. Mark T. Reed, MD, all of Columbia; grandchildren, Nina Serio White (Chris) of Columbia, Sylvia Reed Fairhurst (Tim) of Wales, UK, daughter-in-law, Debra Reed and her daughter, Wendy, of West Columbia; numerous loving nieces and nephews; and his beloved Pugs, Bella and Spunky.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Alyce Weaver; son, Michael Reed; sister, Martha Lewis; brother, John Reed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society , 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Lifecare Center of Columbia for all they did for Mr. Reed.
